Making personal branding personal
Hey Praise,
How are you today?
That being said—Cardi B!
I'm the Queen of Rap and Ariana runs pop. Back to Cardi B—despite loving Nicki, Cardi is closer to my heart than Minaj. Cardi B is talented, no cap. Nicki is too. On the basis of who's more talented, we'll forever argue. Nicki is more talented tho.
But why do I love Cardi B so much?
I figured out last week. Cardi B feels, to me, like the average human who recognizes her privilege for fame without forgetting she's still 'human'.
In short, I relate to Cardi far more than I relate with Nicki.
Cardi is not just a celebrity. When she talks and holds opinions, she does it because it is who she is, not because her position as a celebrity commands it.
She's [bleep] unapologetic—completely herself. Listen to her lyrics. Watch her interviews. View her photos. Read her tweets. Let me do you one better, check out her throwbacks. It is one and the same!
Cardi B is my fave example of what personal branding is like.
Personal Branding is not acting to make people like you. It is defining yourself, and finding people who like what/who/how you are—and connecting with just that people. Remember the words of Marley:
Marlians, step forward. The rest can fuck off. Personal Branding is not deciding to not post that meme you find funny or share your opinions in a manner that requires you to use fuck, shit, and the 4 other cuss words. It is sharing not only a perception, but your experiences.
Perception isn't reality. Reality is reality. Personal Branding isn't just about creating a perception—an idea of something. It is ensuring that "the idea" and the person are the same.
It is not in suppressing your football tweets or creating a separate page for "business" when you are a freelancer or talking about design all day long.
The Gold with Personal Branding is in sharing our experiences with reckless abandon and necessary intention. Looking forward to knowing more about you!
Ciao.
PS: Tell me one thing you had to hide because "personal branding" made you.
