Aim to learn

At a moment's notice, things can change.

Get prepared all you want, sometimes it's just not enough. You really can't always be prepared for responsibility no matter how qualified you are for it. It's as much a hill as it is a pit.

This will be short. Let me tell you a story.

When I joined Bloc, my job was to reorganise how the brand communicated itself visually. The name of the role was supposed to be Brand Communications Manager and what that meant was to be in charge of every visual element leaving the confines of the company to its stakeholders.

It was a fancy word for "visual designer".

However, the offer made a mistake. It came in with Brand & Communications Manager—a role I edited to Lead, Brand & Comms. Now I not only led the visuals, I managed our messaging, social media and content while touching on marketing, PR and communications.

I was qualified. I knew how it worked on paper but I was in no way prepared for what I've had to handle in the past ten months.

And I've found a secret to getting prepared.

Aim to learn.

Ciao.
